During the specialized collection of GeoCities websites, the Internet Archive's servers were located and maintained on Sun Microsystems's Santa Clara Data Center; all materials were “stored on hundreds of slightly modified x86 servers” in a shipping container (“Frequently Asked Questions”). Today, the Internet Archive owns and maintains its own data centers in the San Francisco Bay area. The Archive Team “stored” the files as a torrent, originally seeded by Archive Team founder Jason Scott. Rather than downloading from a centralized server, peers shared and stored files among each other.
